 KENTUCKY HORSE PARK

Located in Lexington, Kentucky, the heart of the Bluegrass, the Kentucky Horse Park is a working horse farm with 1,032 acres surrounded by 32 miles of white plank fencing. The Park is like none other in the world. Dedicated to man's relationship with the horse, the Park features two out- standing museums, twin theaters and more than forty different breeds of horses. All of these elements combine to make a visit to the Park an enjoyable learning experience for everyone - from those unfamiliar with the horse to the horse expert.

At the Park entrance, visitors are welcomed by the majestic Man o' War memorial. One of the greatest race horses to ever live, Man o' War symbolizes the courage, strength, and magnificence of all horses.

The Visitor Information Center provides material detailing the Park's attractions and special events. The Information Center's theater offers the film "Thou Shalt Fly Without Wings." Filmed at locations throughout the world, the film focuses on man's relationship with the horse, providing an educational and exciting introduction to the Park.

In the International Museum of the Horse , the largest of its kind in the world, visitors learn about the 58-million year history of the horse. Exhibits include a collection of 19th Century horse drawn carriages and racing vehicles. Within the museum, the Horse in Sport gallery displays contemporary uses of the horse in competition. "Calumet Farm: Five Decades of Champions" includes 560 gold, silver and crystal trophies, and 35 paintings that trace the racing legacy of Lexington's most famous farm. Changing exhibits of equine art are proudly displayed in the museum's William G. Kenton Gallery. The museum also houses the W. Paul Little Cultural and Learning Center. A permanent exhibit honors this prominent thoroughbred owner and breeder.

The complete text of the Museum's exhibits, along with hundreds of photos are available at the International Museum of the Horse's internet site. In addition, special equestrian exhibits are provided by some of the nations finest museums.

On the Walking Farm Tour, the Park's Farrier exhibits his iron-pounding craft and provides visitors the opportunity to watch the age old art of horse shoeing. The Harness Maker's Shop is the site of complete leather working for harness and saddlery.

An outstanding display of 24 of the Park's more than 40 breeds of horses is located in the Breeds Barn. From March 16 through October31 the color, sound and excitement of the show ring is captured twice daily in the Parade of Breeds. The half-hour presentation highlights the unique characteristics of selected breeds, while authentically costumed riders put the horses through their paces. After the show visitors have the opportunity to meet and pet their favorite horses, and talk with riders. Enjoyed by young and old alike, the Parades' newest addition, Jester the trick pony, has given showmanship a new dimension.

The excitement of the racetrack is brought to life by the elite group of horses housed in the Hall of Champions. Here, racing legend John Henry, 1976 Kentucky Derby winner Bold Forbes, Standardbred Pacers Cam Fella and Staying Together and Quarter Horse superstar Sgt. Pepper Feature are presented in three daily presentations, March 16 through October31.

The Draft Barn is an ever popular stop on the tour. This is the home of the "Gentle Giants," - the horses that pull the Park's horse drawn tour trolley's. The teams include Belgians, Clydesdales, Percherons, English Shires, Halflingers and Suffolk Punch.

The Park offers horseback and children's pony rides. Trail rides provide a chance for visitors to ride through the countryside around the Park.

Our Education Department offers an expansive array of programs and seminars designed for visitors, school and youth groups, children and adults with disabilities, and community education. The Kentucky Horse Park Education Department, the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management, and the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Division of Police in a combined effort have developed The Kentucky Horse Park's "Mustang Trooper Drill Team."

Annual events include the Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event, a Four Star Event, the highest level of competition, which helps to select the U.S. Olympic equestrian team. This event includes stadium jumping, cross-country and dressage competition. The High Hope Steeplechase provides an exciting day of racing over brush and timber. Polo matches begin in June and are scheduled every Sunday through October on the Park's six championship fields. In addition, more than 60 horse shows - from draft horses to miniatures - are held in the Park's extensive show facilities.

The Kentucky Horse Park Campground is among the finest in the South. There are 260 sites each with paved pads, electric and water hook-ups, and fire rings. Areas for primitive tent camping are available as well as an activities pavilion, lighted tennis and games courts, and a junior Olympic size swimming pool.

The Kentucky Horse Park is a fascinating place to visit Spring, Summer or Fall. Winter visits, from Thanksgiving through New Year's, feature an extraordinary festival of lights that will please any visitor who takes the driving tour through "Southern Lights, Spectacular Sights on Holiday Nights" display.

The familiar sight of horses in the fields throughout the Park is a constant reminder of their beauty and strength. For anyone who admires horses, a day at the Park is the experience of a lifetime.
